History

Wetherby based Marsland Timber formed in 1850 by Joshua Marsland.  The family firm was based in Lisbon Street in Leeds and mainly concerned with clog making.  As the company grew and clog trade diminished, Marslands moved on to manufacture packing cases which were used world-wide.

The company celebrates its 150th birthday in 2000, and Marslands still remember their family history and strive to make sure Marsland Timber stays a family business which concentrates on giving local traders the best possible deal.  Since opening in 1992, the Wetherby branch on Walton Road may have become the nerve centre of the company but it still remains dedicated to the local community.

Charity Work

In the past year alone, Marsland Timber has held charity barbecues for local causes which have become infamous.  They have supported the Wetherby Bandstand Appeal, the Wetherby Youth Sports Appeal and provided the timber which built the eye-catching pagoda at the town’s entrance.

The commitment to local people and issues is probably one of the best reasons the business has been able to thrive and last for one and a half centuries when others have fallen by the wayside.

Customer Service

Managing Director, Robert Marsland, said "All the staff and management here regard our customers as the most important thing.  We can offer the attention to detail for our customer needs which major national companies cannot.  It is that personal touch that sets us aside."

Marslands lives on its Reputation

The office wall is filled with letters thanking the company for various jobs they have done.  Being a local company, they do not advertise very much, so word of mouth is important.

The company's reputation has spread and their clients include Leeds United Footballers (one of whom has donated a signed shirt to be raffled at the barbecue) and the Harewood House Trust along with many local businesses and traders.

The Future

The company is hoping to expand and maybe open another branch so that they will be able to offer an even wider range of goods and services.  Whatever happens in the future, some things will never change the company will stay dedicated to local people and businesses.
